I have always been interested in the whole-person health of my patients, not just the specific complaint or problem that brought them to me. After being asked time and time again to help them "get healthy," I pursued additional education and immersed myself in the field of anti-aging medicine and wellness. Our bodies are magnificent machines but imbalances and deficiencies, even small ones, can lead us off the path of wellness and into disease.

What is wellness? Merriam-Webster defines wellness as "the quality or state of being healthy." Wellness isn't simply the absence of disease. It is the synergistic interactions of the physical, emotional, spiritual and financial aspects of your life. Imbalance or lack of health in any of these areas will adversely affect your overall wellness.

Physical wellness is dependent on any number of influences. Your genes, diet, activity level, stressors, sleep and hormone levels all affect how well you feel and how well you are. We all exist on a continuum from minimal wellness to maximal wellness. Our location at any given time is dynamic but the goal should always be to move toward improved wellness. Changes can be introduced in stages and do not have to be extreme; occasionally, however, more drastic measures are necessary. Everyone is unique in her/his make-up and needs. A plan tailored to your specific goals and requirements is essential. Just because it worked for Uncle Joe, doesn't necessarily mean it will be successful for you.
